Cleaning, Polishing, and Freshening Up

Sometimes you just need to clean. Over the weekend the husband and I tackled the floors in the living room. After the construction going on down stairs we knew we needed to just clean. I’ve been trying to work my way thru the house and wash, polish, and vacuum everything. This is a job!!!

I knew it was time to give the living room a fall refresh so I pulled everything off the Welsh cupboard and took everything out of the the room.

We pulled the rug up to get to the floors and even though the rug is vacuumed regularly it was shocking the amount of dirt that was under the rug. After giving the floor a good scrub (this is the husbands job) we vacuumed both sides of the rug before putting it back in place. That done we brought the rest of the furniture back in.

I have a small collection of vintage Chapman Lamps that I brought from my parents house and boy was it past time to polish them. You know how they started lacquering brass in the 70’s? I don’t think Chapman got the memo, thank heavens. The mellow patina of these lamps is glorious. Tarnished or polished. A look you can’t duplicate with a lacquered brass.

The down side is every couple of years I feel compelled to polish them. That was the next step. Bringing all four lamps into my office I spent the afternoon watching HGTV and polishing my lamps.

Oddly enough this is a task I’ve never minded. I love my stuff, so handling it and caring for it is very satisfying. Do you ever polish your brass? I use Wenol Multi Purpose Metal Cleaner which you can order thru Amazon. It is great for brass and copper but I would never use it on silver plate or sterling.

Lamps back in play it was time to wash, dust or shine the supporting players.

The Welsh Cupboard is the star of the show in this room. I do try to change it out somewhat seasonally but my favorite look will always be my collection of Redware. Deciding to be a bit more spare this year with this cabinet I only used the Redware, some pewter, and a bit of my yellow ware collection just to balance things out.

Leaving out my collection of Doulton Lambeth Pub Ware. It may not be that noticeable in the photos but I feel it’s a good change. More places for the eye to rest, or maybe not!!!

When the cupboard was done I was pleased with the end result even though many of the items have been on and off that cupboard for years. Just a bit of freshening up.

But oh, it feels so good to be clean.

Thanks for stopping
