A couple of days ago I woke up to sheer ice on the streets outside my door. The sky was stone gray and as I was slicking up the bedroom for the day, there was just something magical about the way that stone gray atmosphere made things look. This is a hard room to photograph because it is small, and it only has one north facing window. I lit some candles just for fun and it created magic. I wish I could safely live by candlelight always!
There isn’t a lot that has changed from last year’s Christmas bedroom. Oh the plates on the wall are different, but the quilt on the bed is the same. My Pottery Barn Christmas Quilt (similar here) from a couple of years ago has made a repeat performance. What’s new? Well, I made a new dust ruffle, out of rustic linen to match the pillow shams I had made. I added some frayed green velvet ribbon to make a border.
Dust ruffles are something I always line but I didn’t need to with this one, because of the hefty weight of the linen and I frayed the hem! I have my old dust ruffle underneath so it has plenty of structure.
I am still in love with my crazy gnome pillow I made 2 years ago, so it went back on the bed. When something still makes you smile, you just go with it. The rest was just small editions. A Charlie Brown Tree that I already had, reflects nicely in the mirror, and rests in a galvanized bucket. An antique tea towel, that had never been used drapes over the end table. I love the way it has yellowed over time and the fringe is such a great textural delight. A wreath on the mirror. Oh, and a felt garland on the chandelier. Just love this thing!
I bought a new set of Portuguese percale sheets. I thought that I would try them and I had an idea. I wanted to embellish the sheets with embroidery. I wanted to create sheets that had a Christmas feel, so I was on the hunt. I will go into the details in another post but, I wanted to show you the results. These sheets are so dreamy, and I’m so pleased with how they turned out.
I love tucking myself into bed at night in this lodgy casual but, sophisticated room. On the chest I kept it very simple. I draped the top in a wonderful Ralph Lauren wool plaid and then just added a huge sugar cone to the tableau.
Across the room I added another of the antique tea towels over the embroidery on my chair, and a couple of hops candle rings over the arm of the sconces, and the room was done. The piece of framed ephemera is a French Voters Registration from 1824 that I ordered from a Brocante’ in France years ago. I thought it was so interesting, and I had it framed so the paper is floating and all the raw edges are wonky and visible.
Do you decorate your Primary bedroom for the holiday? Just a few touches added to over the years can eventually create a magical space.
I will be back with more.
Thanks for stopping
