I have been trying to embrace the blue in my lower level room for a couple of years. Don’t get me wrong I love blue. I have always had a blue room in my home. When I brought this 100 year old Kittenger sofa over from my parents home I had every intention of recovering it and playing with the finish on the very FANCY wood carving. Making it more to my funky style and taste.
Frankly this couch has thrown me for a bit of a loop. I loved this room with my canvas slipcovered camel back and the neutral pallet.
When I designed this room the last time I decided all the upholstery needed to be neutral because I wanted the antiques to play the music. There is a lot of green in the antiques and the neutral pallet just lent itself to the room better. Well, for now I’ve decided to try and work with this blue couch. The fabric is in perfect condition and yet another expenditure I can’t quite justify.
I brought in my blue and white transfer ware that I have collected for years. Paired it with some pewter chargers to try and bring down the fussiness of them a bit and sprinkled some blue around the room.
The old wicker suitcase has wonderful European tags on it with a full collection of my Great Grandmothers Charles Dickens Series. The perfect Christmas embellishment!
More Blue and White in the corner cupboard and just a wee bit of Christmas.
An antique mirror and a small chandelier reflects light. For Christmas I just added in some faux greens and a favorite hand carved Santa from an old family friend.
On the antique barn vent I again added some drapey faux picks over the top and I was pleased with how that turned out. So easy for big impact. A seven point paper star with a sheet music rosette that I made several years ago. Still love it. An old brooch gives it a bit of jewelry.
The trunk always gets a bit of woodland wonder with trees and greens and of course more of those wonderful Santa Carvings. I try really hard to work Christmas around the things I already have. I try not to remove everything to accommodate Christmas. I added an antique blue and red Persian table square to reintroduce the blue while softening the hard edges of the trunk.
My 18th Century Traveling Desk is folded up for the holiday and creates a riser in which to connect the flat trunk surface to the barn vent visually.
A large marquetry tray I picked up very cheaply at an antique mall in Grand Island NE holds the wall while giant sugar cones fill a bowl. I picked up porcupine quills in Natchez MS. I had never seen them before. I only bought 3 and I wish I’de have bought more. They are beautiful and laying on the table with yet another carving from that family friend.
This crazy little dressing table gets a fresh look with and old Pottery Barn brass lantern filled with my favorite carving of Santa on Skates, a couple of bottle brush trees and a little paper cabin I made awhile ago. A few fairy lights and this table is good to go.
On the pie safe there is another Persian table square grounding the Civil War Santa w/collection of chalk ware sheep.
A tree sits happily inside a small antique transfer ware soup tureen and a damask frog fancies up a stack fo old leather law books.
My antique Victorian Door gets dressed with a simple wreath this year and antique sleigh bells jingle every time you slide the door open.
Hope you enjoyed my lower level tour. Feel free to leave a comment.
