Summer Sleeping

The husband has flown the coup for the weekend. Fishing in Minnesota is his game. The music is turned up a bit too loud and I was fiddling with our bedroom. Well not too much because it is fine.

A few weeks ago as the weather started to warm up, I was struggling with the bedroom. Clearly the down comforter had to go. It was becoming too warm, and I was throwing it off in the middle of the night and smothering the husband. As this had no concern to me, it did bother him a bit!!! Did I want to give the room a full refresh? Not very bad. A favorite Pine Cone Hill quilt that I bought many years ago, to the rescue. But first I had to figure things out.

The quilt is a favorite of mine, with its simple scalloped edge and beautiful quilting of baskets and flowers. A keeper, I will never get rid of. Its versatility is great. However, when we purchased our new mattress a few years ago the quilt no longer worked. The mattress is too deep for it to comfortably cover. So now it makes a great extra.

Placing the quilt on the bed, I pulled it to cover the mattress on the side that is visible. Have you ever done that? Then I folded the down the comforter to the foot of the bed to continue my color play. With the thought that the down comforter would get thrown on the floor at night. I should have known better, this absolutely did not work! The duvet with the down comforter takes up way too much visual space, in my small room. All you see is a huge mound of fluff at the foot of the bed. Time to remove the down.

Placing the now empty duvet cover to the foot of the bed worked fine, but it kind of looked like a hunk of fabric draped over the quilt. Which of course it was! I missed my layers and texture. Reversing the situation I stretched the now empty duvet cover over the bed. Ahh there is my pattern and color!

Next, I folded the quilt to the foot of the bed, let the scalloped edge drape over the edge of the mattress with the duvet peaking out from underneath. I folded it in such a way that all I have to do is pull it up, when the air conditioning gets too chilly.

There is just something about this not quite vintage machine quilted cover that I just love. Its simple neutral color and exquisite quilting just speaks to my antique lovers soul. Thrown over my round patio table for the ground works of a table scape is sublime. Oh I guess I will have to do that for you some time.

At Christmas Time I embroidered a banding and attached it to one set of sheets. I made a comment to the husband that I wanted these sheets to work all year long, to which he said make them reversible! I rolled my eyes and realized he was right but, it meant many more hours at the sewing machine. I was trying to perfect my in-line embroidery skills. One side was a winter theme and the other a simple vine for the rest of the year. I don’t think I ever showed you the reverse. And no, my in-line embroidery is still not perfect!

Here is the Christmas look

You can tell by the time I got to the vine motif I was ready for simpler and faster. The pine cone motif took 90 minutes to stitch out per single motif’s and there were 11 going across the bed! This little project took me a couple of weeks to complete.

These small touches and details I put into my home, I do for me. Partially because I like to be a constant learner, but mostly to make me smile when I make the bed every morning. Do they enhance my rooms? Obviously I feel they do. Are they necessary? Absolutely not! Like I continue to say “Life is About the Details!”

Thanks for stopping
