The first leg of our journey was a days drive from Omaha. Ste Genevieve is the oldest European Settlement west of the Mississippi River. Located half way between St Louis and Cape Girardeau, Ste Genevieve was settled by French Canadians in 1735 and has the largest concentration of French Colonial architecture. This town is like an old woman with just the right smile lines but a few creaks here and there. A woman who knows her worth and is not afraid to reinvent herself.
First stop was Sassafras Creek Originals. This was the shop that brought me to Ste Genevieve. I first heard about Ste Genevieve while watching one of the first episodes of Restoration Road with Clint Harp on the Magnolia Network. You can watch the episode here Missouri Log Cabin. On that episode they dismantled a log cabin and moved it to Ste Genevieve. The owner Kandye Mehurin has opened it as an air BNB. The shop was charming and filled with all the country accoutrement you would expect, a lot of it she makes herself. She asked if I would like a tour of the cabin of course I said yes. It was rustic and primitive but had all the 21 Century necessities. Full of charm this would be a fun sleepover and has a queen bed on the main floor with 2 doubles in the loft.
Arriving at about 3:30 we didn’t have a lot of time to experience all there was to offer, so we had to pick our spots. Investigating online I found the ASL Pewter Foundry website. Ah yes, here you are. I have been looking for some fun napkin rings for a while now. I thought perhaps I had found them at ASL. Looking around in this lovely shop and speaking to the owner/artist Pat was such a treat. Her shop was filled with platters, and plates, sugar bowls and tureens, tankards and goblets, candlesticks and tea services. Pretty much anything you would need to set a gorgeous table including napkin rings. Unfortunately not the one I was looking for. She didn’t have the fox napkin ring I was hoping to buy. Pat said no problem I’ll just make one up for you so you can see it. What! Are you kidding me! In 10 minutes time she was holding a hot napkin ring in her hand! I ordered 10 and she will ship them to me. Can’t wait to set a table with these.
Approaching 5:00 and closing time for all, we went to Audubon’s Hotel for dinner. This is a lovely old hotel with a contemporary restaurant and menu. We had a fabulous meal and spoke to our waitress who also happened to be the manager. We asked about doing a walk about and the best direction to go. We left comfortably full and started our walk and we became totally enchanted with this historic town.
A beautiful evening and a great walk. This town is definitely worth more exploration and a place I would love to go back to. You can tour the inside of a lot of these old structures and I would love to do that one day.
